This no wake reservoir is perfect for an after work break or a short day adventure. Since it’s close to Bozeman you don’t have to commit to being out for the entire day. Enjoy the stunning view and active wildlife. (I once saw an eagle steal a fish from two osprey in mid air.) The afternoon and evening can be a little windy so be ready with a change of clothes and warm layers just in case.
I am a huge fan of the Friends of Hyalite organization and all they do to support the area. Visit their site for more details and activity ideas. Hyalite offers plenty of options for camping, restrooms, and hikes. Friends of Hyalite has details for everything you might want.
Pro Tip: Campsites tend to book out a year in advance. If possible rent and reserve in advance.
Here is a link to the Gallatin Gateway from Weather Underground. Keep in mind you will be going up in elevation. So weather tends to change quickly and be a bit colder. Carry warm and waterproof layers.
YES! I take my animals up to this area all the time. There will be other pet lovers there so be sure to carry a leash and dog bags with you.
Pro Tip: Be the change you want to see in the world. Pick up after your dog.
Once you get up to the lake there are minimal services. Make sure you have enough gas, food, and sunscreen to enjoy your day stress free. I recommend taking a small hibachi grill and local sausages and snacks from the local Bozeman Co-op.
Post Adventure Libation Recommendation
I always like to end my day at the lake with a first class pizza and beer from Bridger Brewing. They stop serving beer at 8pm to comply with the Montana brewery laws but it’s worth the hustle to get there. Kitchen closes at 9pm if you happen to get there shortly after the bar closes. The pizza is still worth the effort.
If you happen to miss Bridger I would recommend getting a burger and beer at Red Chair. I am a personal fan of the Red Chair Burger. Anytime you put pastrami on a burger you are doing something right in your life and should call home and thank your parents for raising you with integrity.
